rather over dramatic introduction to each chapter. It begins accurately enough, with the first year of World War II. France & all of Europe had been defeated by June 1940 & the English Channel Islands have been occupied. Preparations have already been made for the defeat of England & Operation Sea Lion, the valid invasion in September 1940. Interestingly the German troops occupying The Channel Islands & Paris were well behaved & actually spent their believe money on the local economy. This may have lulled many Brits. Then alternative history takes over with a vengence. The German air force badly defeats the RAF, the ability to design more planes & the early warning system of radar stations are destroyed. Having cleared the skies the Germans employee the dreaded blitzgrieg by air & 100,000 land troops. Churchill is killed in his bunker & the royals skim to Canada. The home guard & what is left of the British army retreats from the coastal areas in disarray. Six weeks later the Germans march into London. Now the the Nazis win off the velvet glove. Preparations for the administration of an occupied Britain had been made years before, that reality is made positive in this movie. Most alternative history strains the bonds of credulity & Hitler’s Britain is no exception. That is fraction of the enjoyment. So 2,000,000 men are rounded up & sent to Paris as POW’s & hostages so the rest of the population behaves & does not resist. Quite a task to do so rapidly. The Nazis even have a diminutive dusky book with the names of socially prominent people. Masons, Socialist, Liberals, Jews are all identified. Especially immigrant Jews. They were targeted for immediately disposal. In reality the British has already done this puny task rounding up all non-native Jews as war approached. The police were co-opted by collaborators in their miidst & appeasers like Lord Halifax were enisted to wait on. Edward VIII, abdicated as king of England before the war had been identified as sympathetic to the Nazis & was reinstalled as King. The movie extrapolates on. Britain’s atomic secrets from America are obtained by Germany & the rocket science we obtained compose German scientist in reality is never realized. The last scene of a Swastika on the mooon is quite disconcerting. The movie is entirely done with newsreel & documentary footage, some you may even glance. But if you like history or even “what if” history you’ll like this.

On the whole, this DVD is acceptable, especially given the bargain imprint, under $10.00, and 95-minutes of running time. Nevertheless, I expected more on what the British might have had in store for the Germans had they really attempted an invasion, pursuant to Operation Sea Lion. That invasion would have launched something like 250,000 men onto the shores of southern England in an worry to pick over the country by force in the summer of 1940. Befriend from the German navy and air force would have been massive, but precarious, given the strength of the RAF.

It’s been rumored that Winston Churchill planned to pull out all the stops to repel any invader by flooding the shoreline with petrol and setting it ablaze. Then, as the Germans had tried to land, Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Mosquitos would have bombed them with mustard gas. If this had happened a major conflagration might have resulted. Then, Hitler would likely have retaliated with poison gas bombs from attacking airplanes and the British would have paid dearly. RAF Bomber State would have attacked major cities in Germany the same procedure and the loss of life would have been staggering.

The DVD mentions next to nothing on this topic. Rather, it shows what would have happened to England and the rest of Titanic Britain had the Nazis taken over the country as they had in France, Holland, Denmark, Norway, and elsewhere. The DVD is OK for what it is, but could have offered a lot more.

Wizards (1977) aka War Wizards (the name was changed at the behest of George Lucas as he thought two movies released at the same time by the same studio with war in the title, his being Star Wars, would have been off-putting to movie goers) written and directed by Ralph Bakshi, was certainly a departure from some of his previous adult animation works, Fritz the Cat (1972) and Heavy Traffic (1973), but provided Bakshi the opportunity to show he could create a animated feature for all viewers, young and old, that spoke to the viewer on intelligent terms. Were all viewers ready to hear what he had to say? No, and given the subsequent release of Star Wars (like two weeks later) Wizards, which had been enjoying a great amount of success, got pushed out of theaters to allow for space for George Lucas’ epic space opera. With this release of Wizards on DVD, maybe now his film will garner the recognition it deserved so long ago.

The story goes that the Earth gets consumed in apocalyptic fire as man unleashes his most terrible achievement upon himself, and many years after his destruction, various forms of life begin to come forth, including fairies, elves, pixies along with mutants, beings once humans but changed over thousands of years of exposure to radiation. Almost all technology is gone, wiped from the face of the Earth, and, in its’ place, magic has prospered. Born of the same mother are two brothers who become powerful wizards, one good, Avatar, and the other evil, Blackwolf. After a tremendous battle, Avatar vanquishes Blackwolf, but not before Blackwolf issues a statement that indicates he will not go quietly into that good night.

Blackwolf, now residing in the poisoned lands with the mutants and nasty things, puts together a massive army, but one lacking proper motivation, and, subsequently, they are easily defeated any time they are sent forth into battle. Tired of his inability to advance proper on his enemies and gain ground, Blackwolf commands that his followers dig up once forgotten technology, hoping to find aid within the scattered remnants of the powerful technology of old. His salvation comes in the form of propaganda films created by the Germans during WWII. Likening himself to the leader of the German forces during this past conflict, Blackwolf uses the films to not only motivate his troops, but to instill fear and dread among his enemies, showing the films in the sky during the battles.

This prompts Avatar, his female fairy charge Elinore, the leader of the Elves named Weehawk, and Blackwolf’s captured/converted assassin robot re-named peace, to embark on an adventure to discover the source of Blackwolf’s new power, and destroy it. Can this heroic group effectively end Blackwolf’s reign of terror and end his powerful war machine before all is lost? There’s a nice bit of irony at the end, one that really suited the feature.

So, is the film any good? I have read many opinions that will tell you it’s not, and I can understand why this film would put some off, but I really enjoyed the movie. Bakshi’s goal, as I understood it, was to create an animated feature with heart, one that didn’t talk down to its’ audience, as do other animated features released by other companies, i.e. Disney, do at times. His animation style definitely unconventional, is certainly distinctive, and swims with realism, despite the surface superficialities. I really loved how he incorporated live action footage into the film, enveloping it with animation, creating an eerie superimposed background to various scenes within the movie. The film was rated PG at the time of it’s release, so I would be wary of showing it to younger viewers, but I think it’s a really wonderful alternative full of heart to the shiny, happy, uber-clean, product tie-in animation put out by the larger profit-driven studios. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make a profit, certainly, but sometimes it seems like these films tend to cater to the lowest common denominator, and be more contrived to make money rather than entertain. The animation may seem crude, disturbing, and misogynistic at times, but this is animation with the sugar coating peeled away, mirroring elements within our society. Do people want to see this in an animated feature? Maybe not, but I enjoyed it, but may find myself hard presses to recommend it to all but the more discriminating viewer.

The picture looks really good here in wide screen anamorphic, and there are some wonderful special features including a commentary track by writer/director Ralph Bakshi, theatrical trailers and TV spots for the film, a still gallery with conceptual drawings, and a featurette titled `Ralph Bakshi: The Wizard of Animation’. This provides a wonderful look into the making of Wizards, and Bakshi also provides tons of background on himself, how he got started, his difficulties and successes within the animation business, his motivations for his films, his contempt for animation that talks down to audiences, and his experiences with various individuals during his career. This is the only featuette he’s doing for any of his releases, mainly due to his affinity for the project. Some of his comments, especially the ones hinting towards various conspiracies leveled at him, make him sound a little nutty, but make for entertaining viewing. All in all, an excellent release of a great little animated film that went against the conventional grain. Also, keep an ear out for a voice appearance by Mark Hamill as Sean, king of the fairies.

While it is certainly not for young children, older teens and adults will get a real kick out of “Wizards”. Set in a post-apocalyptic world wrought by radiation due to a nuclear holocaust, most humans have died, and the population consists mainly of elves, fairies, dwarves, and then the mutants. The world is in danger from the threat of technology, brought upon by the evil wizard, Blackwolf. It is up to his brother, the comical, yet good hearted wizard, Avatar, to stop him. Joining Avatar in his quest are Weehawk, chief of a tribe of warrior elves, Elenor, fairy princess of the land of Montagar, and Peace, a former assassin of Blackwolf’s (formerly known as Necron 99) who changes his ways and fights against the threat of technology. The WWII references abound, and there are many more adult-oriented references throughout. It dares to go where cartoons usually do not, making allusions to sex, prostitution, religion, and there’s even a rather racist Vietnam reference if you can catch it. However, I still highly recommend “Wizards”, because in all it’s brashness, it deserves to be seen. What the animation lacks in quality, it more than makes up for in imagination. It’s quite funny, and it also delivers some unexpected twists. I personally really like the way it was done. The music really seems to fit the overall style of it, and the wonderful character designs and voice acting really pulls it all together. I definetely recommend it to anyone searching for something creative and different, and I’m sure any fan of cult classics will definetely want to check it out. However, I stress the importance of having an open mind. I think those who are more open to controversial subject matter will be able to better enjoy it, with all it’s dark humor and it’s alternative-type feel. I think it is something that everyone should see at least once. It deserves more credit than it has been given, and I think that it will really make people stop and think about our world, and about themselves.

This box set, Starhunter 2300, The Complete Series, is actually the second season of Starhunter. The original series, just called “Starhunter”, starred Michael Pare, Claudette Roche, Tanya Allen, Stephen Marcus, and Murray Melvin.

The series was cancelled and then returned 2 years later in this newer installment. Tanya Allen and Stephen Marcus were the only cast members to return for this second installment.

This show, along with it’s first season, is easily my favorite sci-fi series ever. The first season came out a couple of years before Joss Whedon’s much acclaimed “Firefly”, to which it is often compared. I get the impression that Mr. Whedon actually might have got some of his ideas from Stahunter’s first season .

This second season, “Starhunter 2300″ however, is my favorite season of this show.

Imagine a sci-fi series set in space where all the main characters are desperate and poor! There is no politically-correct ‘prime directive’. There is no magical warp-drive or transporters or any quick and easy way to get to the stars. Humanity is still mostly confined to the Solar System. Hyperspace is still the stuff of theoretical physics, unreliable pseudoscience, and the obsession of a Mensa-like organization of elitists called “The Orchard”. Earth is too polluted to live on, so most people live in dingey space colonies scattered throughout the solar system (the lucky ones live on Mars)

The Solar System is impossible to police. The last thing resembling a police force rebelled and became the Raiders, scattered ‘clans’ who raid colonies, steal children (many of the original Raiders became sterile due to something like a futuristic Gulf War Syndrome) and run much of the prostitution and drug business in the solar system.

The only solution to maintain any semblance of order? Bring violent criminals to justice by paying bounty-hunters to bring them in! There is so much poverty and desperation in the solar system that somebody is bound to be willing to do it. That is the role of our main characters and the basis of the concept for Starhunter.

The cast is excellent all around. I could go on at length about each of the castmembers, but then this would turn into a 6-page review. Some of them may be familiar to you from other shows and feature films. Many interesting guest stars pop in through the season as well.

This second season, “Starhunter 2300″ features much-upgraded special effects, compared to the original Starhunter. Even the trip-hop theme music and the moody ambiente incidental music are a huge improvement.

The series begins where the first season’s cliffhanger ending left off, but don’t worry if you didn’t see the first season, the disorientation of not knowing what’s going on put’s you in a position to easily relate to the main characters and their situation. You have to find your way around, much as the characters themselves do.

The year is 2300, 15 years after the time of the first season. Percy (Tanya Allen) finds herself alone on the Tulip, a delapidated old space-cruiseship that has been her home for most of her life. However, she finds that she has just come out of hyperspace and has somehow missed 15 years of time. She is now all alone on the ship she and her uncle Dante used to lease for the purpose of bounty-hunting. She has no relatives, no friends, and no income. She does, however have the Tulip and must now decide how she is going to survive.

She is docked at Clarke Staion (in Jupiter-Fed) where she sets about trying to find a new crew. Things don’t go too smoothly, though. In fact, they never go smoothly through the entire season. Debts, jealousy, untrustworthy friends, corrupt officials, mental instability, and ghosts from the past plague the entire crew. Controversial subjects are tackled in interesting ways in the seedy settings of a mostly lawless and often amoral society.

It’s a shame that the series itself was plagued by a severe lack of promotion and lack of interest on the part of some of it’s powerful network investors. Sadly, on the verge of commencing a new season of shooting, the production was abruptly shut down, without any warning. If you like this series as much as I did, then you’ll be wishing that it had been allowed to continue. I find myself watching this box-set end-to-end, again and again and I still can’t find another series that I have enjoyed this much.

I thought the only sci-fi that would ever come out of the British Empire would be a spoof-show riddled with toilet humor.

But I did enjoy this whole series. Especially towards the end, however as the other reviewer stated, production does lack a little, but the stories make up for it in spades (along with the SCRUMPTIOUS Tanya Allen, she is so friggin cute).

Basically it’s like watching a slightly less interesting Firefly with British accents. If you like Crusade, Firefly, B5 etc. this is a good addition to that genre drawer (fellow DVD compulsives). Any sci-fi fan would appreciate these stories on some level.

Director Coky Giedroyc provides the newly thrice-spliced Masterpiece Theatre with a two and a half-hour remake of Emily Bronte’s Gothic classic, “Wuthering Heights (Signet Classics)” that adequately depicts the passionate love/hate relationship made famous by Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff for readers since 1847.

I have not had the pleasure of rereading the novel for a few years, but this adaptation seems remarkably true to the overall spirit of the story. It includes the two generations of Earnshaws and Lintons most noticeably removed from the 1939 film version starring Lawrence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Catherine (Wuthering Heights 1939 Classic Black and White with Original Theatrical Trailer (Import, All-Region)). The non-linear time sequencing of the film’s plot mirrors the timeline of the novel; the only real difference here is the absence of the novel’s first person narrators, Mr. Lockwood (Heathcliff’s tenant) and Nellie (housekeeper of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange). Giedroyc’s version employs a third person technique in both the flashback and present day storyline to retell the Earnshaw/Linton history rather than rely on the biased comments of Bronte’s storytellers.

Lockwood’s absence also means the sequence of events revolving around the apparition of Catherine’s ghost does not move the plotline. Instead the opening scene treats us to a vengeful Heathcliff, manipulating his sickly son Linton’s marriage to the second generation Catherine, daughter of Edgar and his love. In fact, the entire aspect of the supernatural is not touched upon in the film as intensely as in the novel. Heathcliff yearns for his dead companion, and participates in a ghoulish digging up of Catherine’s corpse. In a fantastic feat of cinematography the audience is privy to two vantage points: Heathcliff’s vision of her–young and fully fleshed as if alive–and then the gruesome reality seen from behind Heathcliff’s back–Catherine’s decomposing skull. This film emphasizes the real and the gritty rather than the ethereal.

Similarly, it includes some passionate and psychologically intense moments that add carnality to the overall telling of the story that fits well with and enhances the wild emotions portrayed by Bronte. Heathcliff and his Catherine consummate their love on the moors; Edgar desperately makes love to Catherine in their marriage bed and Heathcliff commands that his wife not look at him as he takes her after their impromptu elopement. Somehow these moments add drama and needed adult content and motivation to what the other adaptations skirted around. When Heathcliff realizes that his woman has slept with Edgar, his anger boils over with helpless indignation. He wants revenge and after witnessing his closeness to Catherine, the audience sees him more as a jilted second choice despite his accomplishment; the face of the gypsy orphan still stares back at him.

Not that actor Tom Hardy resembles a gypsy in any way. His incontrollable mop of dark brown hair flops annoyingly onto his face; it definitely could use a trim or a ribbon holding it away. Nevertheless, he does the character of Heathcliff and the Byronic hero justice; he most decidedly reigns supreme in the scenes in which he participates. His passion seems almost Pilate-controlled from a steel core that is both practical and functional within the constraints of his world. However, like the novel’s character, he loses himself frequently with a cynic’s paranoia that lashes out with the intent to destroy whatever is in its path.

Cathy, on the other hand, as portrayed by Charlotte Riley has a feral beauty that aptly suggests the novel’s heroine. However, Riley’s Catherine has been “de-bratted”; the novel depicts Cathy with a nasty selfish streak while this Masterpiece Presentation shows us a confused child/woman that indeed does what she chooses but then seems at odds with the results.

Isolation plays a big part in Bronte’s novel. However, this film fills the screen with an assemblage of others that makes the entire presentation more real. Rather than just the dire foursome and their progeny, villagers, church-goers, barroom card players and fighting children add authenticity to the period and in comparison more starkness to the actual footage shot on the moors.

Bottom Line? The 2009 presentation of “Wuthering Heights” created for Masterpiece Theatre Classics smolders with a raw sexuality and practical strength that will probably not please most purists. Nevertheless, the film’s team put together a good adaptation that brings the feel of the novel to life without imitating other film presentations of the past. Recommended.

This adaptation is a fresh rendering that focuses on the complex passions of the two main characters. As a former college professor, I found it difficult to engage my students in reading the novel instead of Cliff’s Notes. I think this film version of the novel would definitely inspire those not used to reading 19th century lit to attack the novel with new eyes. I say fresh rendering because the torrid love/hate relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy is the core of the film. It is also about abandonment, including Cathy’s. The film is not burdened by the triple narratives of the book. The novel is a Gothic one, but the film dispenses with the supernatural elements that would seem distracting if included. Heathcliff’s plea to the dying Cathy to haunt him so they can still be together, Cathy’s plea that he let her die in his arms,imagining that she would be tossed out of heaven for loving him too much, the etchings on the wooden wall reading Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Linton, Catherine Heathcliff, all of these hint at the resignation of the lovers that their lives together are doomed.

I am appreciative of the inclusion of carnal scenes, implicit and explicit, that are merely intimated in the novel. Heathcliff and Cathy tearing each other apart on the crag where they had earlier “lay with each other” and Heathcliff’s anguished lovemaking to Isabella where he attempts to feel Cathy’s body instead of his wife’s. “Turn your face away,” he tells her.

I thought the actors wonderful. Tom Hardy’s embodiment of the brooding, obsessive Heathcliff is remarkable and the newcomer playing Cathy very good despite shrinking a bit in Hardy’s tour de force.

Purists will probably not endorse this version, but it is far and away the best film to capture the essence of the novel, the raw, violent passion between the lovers which is the lynchpin of the story.

The best fairy tales have as many — if not even more — lessons for adults as they do for kids. “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,” directed by passe Monty Pythonite Terry Gilliam, is a tall example of this.

Mining a rarely tapped vein of German fantasy lore, the movie brings to life its unlikely hero in the fabricate of a middle-aged, at times elderly, German nobleman. Munchausen wanders the world — and occasionally places above and below — seeking snide adventures with his great companions: Albrecht, the strongest man alive; Berthold, the fastest man alive; Adolphus, who has incredible vision; and Gustavus, who has improbable hearing and worthy lungs.

In the movie, an elderly Munchausen disrupts a theatrical production of his adventures in a 17th century city under seige by invading Turks. Munchausen’s efforts to residence the characterize straight are in turn disrupted by a cannon assault, and his attempt to quietly die in the theater’s ruins are interrupted by Sally Salt (Sarah Polley), a itsy-bitsy girl with a expansive heap of stubborn. Sally is possibly the only person around who believes Munchausen is accurate, and her view is impetus enough for the baron to dispense with dying long enough to try and assign the town.

Setting off with stowaway Sally in a prop ship floating on a novel of hot underthings, Munchausen finds his missing friends and saves the town as promised after some eye-popping adventures — and with a few twists and surprises on the arrangement.

John Neville is perfect as the dashing, resourceful and exceptionally lucky Baron Munchausen. In both the younger and older incarnations, he glows with the air of a fable near to life, straight from a storybook wonderland. As his older self, he exudes curmudgeonly bitterness over this novel Age of Reason which is eroding his tales. The world, he says, “is made of laws now. Laws of hydraulics, laws of social dynamics, laws of this, that and the other. No status for three-legged cyclops in the South Seas. No location for cucumber trees and oceans of wine. No situation for me.”

Ah, but there is. Sometimes, the world honest needs reminding.

Munchausen rides cannon balls, uses snuff to defeat a massive sea beast, dances on air, sails to the moon and generally cheats death. Most of the time. But always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his notice, like any ample, stalwart hero should. If you’re spacious on realism, pass this one by. But if you want to consume your sense of wonder, buy up “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.” Please, bear he’s genuine or the town is lost.

Sometimes you despair. A unusual format is trust upon us – and an opportunity is presented to the movie industry to finally to do the business by their classics – and what do they do – they give us the same feeble dumb stock and rip us off by getting us to pay more for it.

Twenty years on, Terry Gilliam’s 1989 fantasy chronicle is composed improbable – inventive, silly, touching, and on a scale few movies today would even dare to go reach. Unfortunately, the 2008 transfer of it to the unusual format is more Blur-Ray than Blu-Ray. And while it’s not bad all the diagram through – it’s not far off it. For gargantuan parts of the film there’s grain and blocking – the colours in some instances are better for clear – but it’s also distinct that shrimp or no restoration has been done to the print – when like “Time Bandits” – here is a fantasy film that is crying out for a tidy up – and would surely have been worthy more commercially viable if it had been cleaned up – and a gigantic deal made of it (even a re-launch in the cinemas? ) .

The extras mimic the special edition DVD articulate – reviewed elsewhere – nothing tall.

When you perceive “Frigid Hand Luke” or “Zulu” or “2001: A Set Odyssey” on BLU RAY, the natty up work is immediately apparent and evident throughout the entire film – making them an delicious ’spot-the-difference’ experience for the whole duration. But you know you’re in worry with “Munchausen” the second the washed out “Columbia” logo comes up at the beginning – I’ve seen crinkled videotape examine better than this. What a broad disappointment and what a disservice to a really large fantasy film. I can only deem of the gobsmacking beauty of Uma Thurman as she appears in a seashell to cheer myself up…

Unfortunately this release is why Amazon reviews are significant. Avoid this overly expensive dreadful reissue unless you absolutely have to maintain it…

Yes, it’s tru: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in To Have and Have Not (1945), Howard Hawks’s variation on Casablanca but adapted from–as legend has it–Ernest Hemingway’s self-declared “worst novel.” (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author’s least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks’s and Bogart’s most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious accent to an already wonderful mood.

Bogart and Bacall were never more popular than in The Big Sleep, the 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s novel, directed by Howard Hawks. Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay.

Dark Passage (1947) is a gimmicky film noir starring Bogart as an escaped criminal who undergoes plastic surgery and holes up at the home of Bacall’s character while healing and preparing to prove his innocence. If you can last through the first half-hour of this thing–which is shot entirely from the subjective view of Bogart’s bandaged face, which we don’t see until later–you might find ample reason in the stars’ performances to stick around for the conclusion. But director Delmer Daves (A Summer Place) tests a viewer’s endurance with such an obvious, attention-getting ploy.

John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) directed Key Largo (1948), a smart thriller about a gangster (Edward G. Robinson) who holds a number of people hostage in a hotel in the Florida Keys during a tropical storm. Bogart is the returning war veteran who takes on the villains, and Bacall is on hand as one of the people on the wrong end of Robinson’s gun. Somewhat similar in tone to To Have and Have Not this moody movie captures a certain despair offset by the bond between individuals united by common purpose. Claire Trevor won an Academy Award for her part as Robinson’s alcoholic girlfriend. –Tom Keogh

A fictional dramatization of the anti-Communist witch-hunts that plagud the U.S. during the late 1940s and early ’50s, Guilty by Suspicion examines one of the most shameful periods of American history. After producing such prominent films as Rocky and Raging Bull, Irwin Winkler made his directorial debut with this 1991 drama, basing his screenplay on the harsh reality of the blacklisting era. Set during 1951, when the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) held hearings to target alleged Communist affiliations within the Hollywood filmmaking community, the film stars Robert De Niro as a prominent director who is urged to “name names” to appease the committee. Rather than betray one of his closest friends, he refuses to “cooperate” with the committee and is quickly blacklisted, his entire career in jeopardy. Costarring Annette Bening as the director’s sympathetic ex-wife, the film doesn’t pack the emotional punch of The Front (another blacklisting-era film, starring Woody Allen), but Winkler captures the paranoid anxiety of the period with a wealth of authentic detail. Because the De Niro character underestimates the power of the HUAC, we share his shock and dismay when he must finally face the committee. Without seeming like a dry history lesson, Guilty by Suspicion illuminates the unconstitutional evil of the blacklist era while offering a glimpse behind the scenes of Hollywood’s past. Adding to the realism, director Martin Scorsese makes a rare cameo as another filmmaker under fire. Although Winkler’s script and direction are perhaps too melodramatic, Guilty by Suspicion was clearly made with noble purpose and intention. For anyone interested in the blacklisting era and Hollywood history, this movie’s a must-see. –Jeff Shannon
